Elementary Philosophy Science Teaching
Understanding the Language of Science by Steven G. Darian, "To my knowledge, there has never [before] been a volume that analyzes, in one place, the actual language of science--those elements of thinking that are acknowledged to be the basis of scientific thought. . . . [Thus] this is a very important book, contributing to several fields: science, education, rhetoric, medicine, and perhaps even philosophy. . . . Darian's erudition is truly astonishing."--Celest A. Martin, Associate Professor, College Writing Program, University of Rhode IslandFrom astronomy to zoology, the practice of science proceeds from scientific ways of thinking. These patterns of thought, such as defining and classifying, hypothesizing and experimenting, form the building blocks of all scientific endeavor. Understanding how they work is therefore an essential foundation for everyone involved in scientific study or teaching, from elementary school students to classroom teachers and professional scientists. In this book, Steven Darian examines the language of science in order to analyze the patterns of thinking that underlie scientific endeavor. He draws examples from university science textbooks in a variety of disciplines, since these offer a common, even canonical, language for scientific expression. Darian identifies and focuses in depth on nine patterns--defining, classifying, using figurative language, determining cause and effect, hypothesizing, experimenting, visualizing, quantifying, and comparing--and shows how they interact in practice. He also traces how these thought modes developed historically from Pythagoras through Newton.
Philosophy of Time Travel - The Philosophy of Time Travel is a fictional text from the movie Donnie Darko, written by Roberta Sparrow, a somewhat-deranged 101 year-old woman, whom at an early point in her life acquired some sort of grand revelation regarding how to avert a doomsday event centered around the universe destroying itself because of the existence of an alternate, unstable timeline. At that point she suddenly abandoned nunhood, wrote the text and began teaching science. Center for the Philosophy of Nature and Science Studies (CPNSS) - The Centre for the Philosophy of Nature and Science Studies (Danish: Center for Naturfilosofi og Videnskabsstudier: CNV) involves a small group of scientists, philosophers of science, and researchers engaged in the interdisciplinary field denominated here as the philosophy of nature and science studies, including history, philosophy and sociology of science. It is a department of the Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen. Philosophy of science - The philosophy of science is the branch of philosophy which studies the philosophical assumptions, foundations, and implications of the sciences, including the formal sciences such as mathematics and statistics, the natural sciences such as physics, chemistry, and biology, and the social sciences, such as psychology, sociology, political science, and economics. In this respect, the philosophy of science is closely related to epistemology, ontology, and the philosophy of language. History and philosophy of science - The history and philosophy of science (HPS) is an academic discipline that encompasses the philosophy of science and the history of science. Although many scholars in the field are trained primarily as historians or philosophers, there are degree-granting departments of HPS at several prominent universities (see below).
